The thing I like about Zigbee is open source. One thing that I really like about ZWave is the required conformity and licensing restriction. The current downside of Zigbee is the standard from one company may not be fully compatible with the standard of another company.

It allows for multiple vendors to offer their products using the Zigbee standard and forces verification to work with other vendors. This should really elevate the downfalls of Zigbee making a much more viable platform.

I've noticed in the forums some people have had problems with the Zigbee CC2351 hub simply due to radio strength or overloaded number of nodes. just make sure your controller is well supported and can do secure pairing. Most of them offer your basic on/off functionality where Inovelli shines is the additional features like double or triple tap, on switch programming, current/power/wattage draw, directional mount, scene selecting and more. I've tried GE, Lutron, Leviton, and a couple others. They are by far the best investment I've made for smart switches. Inovelli has the most features in a single switch you can get (Inovelli Red). I kept the wall switch in the on position all the time and used the pull chain as the main control. Also, I used one of these to control the light in my ceiling fan. However, if the junction box gets wet (for outside lights, etc.) it could burn your house down. In my setup, there's a neutral/return path at the light, and if you wire it in properly, you can use the switch as normal and add the z-wave functionality. If you want to move away from z-wave, there are a bunch of wifi switches that will work.īut the way I solved the issue (and I don't recommend this unless you are a qualified electrician) is by adding one of these relays in the junction box at the light itself. Inovelli makes a few z-wave switches that don't require a neutral, but I think they are 120V only (I'm in the US, so I don't have a lot of research about non-US). Unfortunately, there's very few options out there. So I'm looking at a Zooz one that's about 60 Canadian Rupes. USB Hub - I can't really tell a whole lot of differences between them, other than some costing 10 bucks, others 100.
Do some locks only support updating their lock status, rather than allowing you to remotely lock or unlock them? I can't tell for certain, but it almost looks like most/all support that, and that it's just a configuration in HA. so, double tap turns multiple lights on for example. Light switches - Does anyone have a favorite brand/model? I'm hopefully looking to get some switches that I can program the buttons. So moving into that, I'm looking at light switches and door locks to start with. Looking into Z-Wave and Zigbee, they're very similar, but I'm finding more devices support Z-Wave. I've previously used almost exclusively wifi for my light switches and light bulbs (Though recently going to the Philips Hue system). I'm about to move into a new place that needs some serious updating, and as a result I've already started mapping out how I can "Smarten" this house up. I'm hoping to work off of someone else's experience with Z-Wave a little.
